Free Speech is one of the basic principles to guarantee civic participation in democratic processes. This requires efficeint information of the public, so that all members of society share a mutual basis for politicak and social participation. Current trends in market liberalisation and ownership concentration tend to undermine content diversity and cultural pluralism. Various alert campaigns like Green Ribbon and Blue Ribbon try to build awareness for the importance for free speech in democratic societies. Study Groups have been installed by various Non-Governmental Organizations to foster research in the implications of market concentration on diversity and information issues. The Free Speech Community Day will be dedicated to the dynamics of current market developments and its effects on free speech and community media by taking a closer look at European media policy and market convergence. |
